PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder)

271701236Could it be trauma?

The word “trauma” is frequently thrown around. But few people know the true meaning of trauma or why some people can go through something tough to others and seem fine while some experience a seemingly minor event and yet are affected by it profoundly.

Trauma, by definition, exceeds our ability to cope. This definition is interesting because it can relate more to your coping tools than the actual event itself. For example, a person may have the means to cope with losing a loved one and yet experience severe distress from a seemingly minor embarrassing social interaction.

Trauma that is not processed can turn into Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder or PTSD.

What is PTSD?

It is a set of physical/emotional symptoms that can arise from one or more experiences of trauma, and they can negatively impact your life.

If you have PTSD, you could be experiencing intrusive thoughts, nightmares, anxiety, fear, and avoidance of one or more life situations.

PTSD can make having a normal life impossibly difficult. Ordinary situations can cause a person to feel highly uncomfortable and nervous with a desire to escape.

It can take the joy out of life and make accomplishing your goals painfully hard.
